ELEMENTS OF THE FUNCTIONAL FORMULA
Black Currant
Highly aromatic, with a distinct sweet-tart flavor profile, black currants have the highest concentrations of vitamin C and GLA (gamma-linolenic acid, an essential omega-3 fatty acid) of any fruit or vegetable. Their history as human food is long and rich – a Florentine recipe book dating from 1550 refers to the black currant as the “grape of the monks”.
Black currants make a beautiful sight in the summer, hanging in glowing purple bunches in the bush. Native to central and northern Europe and northern Asia, these hardy little fruits are now cultivated locally in the fertile soils of the Pacific Northwest.
Beet
What we call a beet, the round purple bulb that sits under the soil beneath an array of beautiful green-yellow leaves, is actually a beetroot. And when your mom told you its good for you, she wasn’t messing around. The beet’s deep purple pigment belies an intense concentration of antioxidant molecules, accounting for its potent free-radical scavenging abilities.
Originally cultivated by the Romans, the beet’s popularity soared in the 19 th century when they came to be used as an alternative source of sugar. Today, these nutrient-rich veggies are extensively cultivated here in the Pacific Northwest.
Schisandra Fruit
The schisandra schrub is a tough, hardy plant native to wide swaths of East Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine, dried schisandra fruit has been used as a sedative and tonic agent for thousands of years. In Chinese it is called wu wei zi (“five-flavored fruit”). In addition to its contribution to the tension-relieving function of the Calm/Detox formula, schisandra fruit also helps protect the liver against various toxins.
Chrysanthemum Flower
A beautifully vibrant flower with deep symbolic meaning in several parts of Asia, the chrysanthemum is also a powerful ancient healing herb. Historical writings confirm that dried chrysanthemum flower has been an important medicinal herb in China for over 2,000 years.
Among its many uses, chrysanthemum is prescribed as a natural detoxifier, which is why Dr. Lee included it in the Calm/Detox formula.
Ginseng
The term ginseng refers to several species of the genus Panax. For more than 2,000 years, the roots of this slow-growing plant have been valued in Chinese medicine. One of the first traditional Chinese herbs to gain widespread acceptance in the West, ginseng is used to lift the Yang, improve circulation, increase blood supply and aid in recovery from weakness after illness.
Ginseng is also widely believed to be an effective adaptogen, which increases the body’s resistance to stress. It is this function that accounts for its presence in the Calm/Detox formula.
Ginkgo Biloba
The Ginkgo tree, the leaves of which turn a beautiful canary yellow in autumn, is one of the oldest living tree species on earth, with a history that dates back 150-200 million years. In traditional Chinese medicine, extracts from the leaves are used to improve circulation and enhance memory, as well as to relieve tension and stress. In addition, Ginkgo leaves contain high concentrations of flavonoids, relatively unsung antioxidants that halt free radical damage as well as the best of them.
Western Nutritional Science
Scientific understanding of human nutrition is a relatively new phenomenon. Since the early 20th century, we have made major leaps in figuring out how and why vitamins and other nutrients work. Where the other elements in our functional formulas represent ancient knowledge passed down through the centuries, this group (which includes B and C vitamins as well as essential amino acids) owes its existence to modern nutritional science. This is where old meets new.
